Several years ago I was told by a top producer that I would never close 80 million dollars a year if I didn’t fundamentally change the way I did business.  Going to settlements, personally responding to all phone calls, taking time to educate clients on every aspect of the loan process, steering clients away from refinancing and/or directing them to helocs because it was in their best interest…………I needed to off-load all of this and spend more time on “selling” if I wanted to close 80 million a year.  He was right, and he helped me consciously cement how I have always done business.   

And although I still have never closed 80 million in a year, I have helped 1000’s of clients, all without ever once “asking for the business”.  More importantly from a personal standpoint, I am blessed to count many of my clients as good friends, and I am humbled by all of the referrals, flattering customer survey responses, and even gifts (i.e. gift card(s), baked goods, flowers, ajeep, DHS swag, to name a few) that I have received over the years.

After 30 years in the business, It still boils down to this: my clients’ needs come ahead of my wallet. Whether educating first time home buyers, recommending the best program for a relocating military service member or DHS employee (even if it is with their credit union), or showing a trusting client why refinancing does (or does not) make sense, my clients’ needs always win out. It may be unconventional, and it is certainly not taught in any “how to sell” books, but it works for me……..and my clients.
